Summer living tips for ostomates
With the weather heating up and school out for summer, we start looking towards outdoor swimming and activities, trips to the beach, BBQs and even more fun in the sun.
However summer with all its related activities can bring with it a great deal of anxiety for ostomates.
Summer brings with it hotter weather meaning people head to the beach, pool or travel on holiday. One of the major concerns for people living with an ostomy is body image. You may find that you need to shop around to find swimwear that you are comfortable in. For women, a patterned 1-piece perhaps even with a bow or design with extra material around the abdomen may be comfortable and can camouflage stoma appliances. Alternatively tankinis may also work for you and sarongs are also a good option for the beach. For men, high-waisted shorts are a popular style to try. Each person is different, so wear what you feel comfortable in. There are smaller sized pouches available such as the Pelican mini sized pouches that some ostmates find more comfortable for swimming. Alternatively a colostomate may even be able to use a Pelican Select Minuet Stoma Cap or Stoma Cap Plus instead of their normal pouch.
You may find that you perspire more in warmer climates and may need to change your pouch more regularly, so it is advisable to ensure that you have more supplies than usual with you. You should store your supplies in a cool dry place, as adverse heat may affect their performance.
It is advisable to drink plenty of water as if you have a stoma, in particular an illeostomy, you may become more easily dehydrated. Remember to drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after you spend time outdoors or taking part in activites.
We seem to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables during the warmer months. In moderation, fresh fruit can and should be included in a well-balanced diet. Some fruits can cause an increase in pouch output. This includes fruits with stones such as mangoes, plums, apricots, etc. Keep this in mind when you are eating a picnic or the beach where facilities are not always readily available.
Enjoy the warm weather and summer activities!
